AM2PM work with some of the UK’s largest transport logistics companies and are always on the look-out for reliable, hardworking, experienced drivers.
Our customer base has often asked us to reach into new areas of supply off the back of good work with them on the core services of their business model. Transportation is an example of this.
Driver solutions for Transportation needs of our customers has now become a regular focus for us. The steady growth of demand requiring HGV drivers for logistics and transportation sectors has been ramping up over the last few years. Reflected by our own growth of people dedicated to this recruitment supply area by adding dedicated consultants, desks and branches devoted to Driver Recruitment.
It isn’t all good news though.
The Driver Recruitment market has some real challenges currently, and it has become more and more difficult to navigate for various reasons. The after-effects of Brexit and the associated legislation, agreements and reaction by those working in the sector, driver shortages post-Covid as a result of increased logistical services as people purchase more online and, the rising rates of pay due to short driver supply. These are not all of the issues but they are key challenges and it means we have to be extra savvy in order to continue to provide good recruitment services to our customers within the Driver sector.
We also have IR35 to think about. The IR35 reform was aimed at making agency workers who previously operated as a Ltd company to pay more tax and the agencies or end clients would equally pay more employer NI contributions. The problem here is if we retain the driver’s income at the same rates to avoid the issues, the knock-on effect would increase employment costs by 25% which would be picked up by the agencies, not viable at those numbers and thus stalling the market.
There are several routes we can take to address this.
- Drivers could take a reduced net income. This is risky as UK drivers may leave the sector as their earnings would not be as lucrative, another risk is their foreign counterparts may desire work on the continent instead and not bother with the UK’s lower earning potential.
- Agencies could absorb the increased costs. Again risky as margins have been driven down by hauliers over the years. The rates cannot viably go south any further. Agencies would be almost at a loss to run driver desks.
- The Hauliers/end clients could pick up the rise in costs. Again with margins squeezed for many years now this is not an option to cover such hikes in charges.
Overall we anticipate a coordinated effort to absorb the increased costs across all parties is likely to be the only route out of this, however, that will not be easy to implement.
